At Czech & Speake, the passion of our founder Frank Sawkins touches everything we do. An Englishman, with a background in interior and product design, Frank transposed his design sensibilities in the creation of lifestyle brand Czech & Speake in 1978. In 1980 he opened the doors to our first store at No. 39 Jermyn Street opposite his studios at No. 88 (from which our signature fragrance, No. 88, takes its name). Over three decades later he is still researching and composing as he, his inspiration and his brand criss-crosses the globe.
Whether creating our Teflon coated instruments for our prize winning air safe manicure set or working with craftsmen to produce the highest quality leather travel goods Frank finds inspiration in the most intriguing of places. It could be a fascination for exotic woods linked with his passion for Japanese culture, but it’s always the unexpected that informs his elegant aesthetic. For Frank, even the simplest of products can be elevated by design; “I want to create luxury but also a useful product”
As our creative heart, Frank also relishes the innovation of perfumery, and his passions also influence our individual yet subtle fragrances. A trip to Havana with its Latin rhythms, smooth cigars, fine rums and exotic beauties inspired him to interpret a country through scent. One of the very few British men involved in the creation of fine fragrance, who else but Frank Sawkins could have bottled, in his fragrance Cuba, a country’s laid back style and exotic flair.
Frank Sawkin’s passion, energy, and unique vision continue to redefine elegance for a new generation of contemporary gentlemen. Thanks to him, Czech & Speake has become a byword for all that is covetable, masculine and timeless. He remains a true rarity – the creator of a genuinely English luxury brand.
